How to become a shoe care expert

You don’t just like your shoes, you love them. They are the most beautiful shoes in the world. Especially that one pair that you never seem to be able to take off. Wherever you go, they come with you. But are your shoes actually clean? Who hasn’t experienced that embarrassing moment when you have to take off your shoes at a friend’s house and an unpleasant odour is released? But don’t worry, it’s completely natural and doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. Everybody sweats in their shoes and the humidity produced allows bacteria and fungus, or worse athlete’s foot, to develop. And this can lead to bad odours. Discover our tips for quickly and effectively disinfecting the inside of your shoes without driving yourself crazy.
1st action to take

Clean your shoes

To remove marks, mud and dust, clean your shoes with a cloth or brush. All you need is a bit of elbow grease and you’re good to go. You’re now ready to disinfect them.
2nd action to take

Disinfect the inside of your shoes

The radical solution

Do your shoes smell bad? Just throw them away and buy a new pair. It may be an effective solution but it could be expensive.

Other solutions

There are all kinds of products that you can use on the inside of your shoes like lemon essential oil, ammonia, rubbing alcohol and white vinegar, or you could even put your shoes in a bag inside the freezer to kill any bacteria… These solutions may be effective but be careful where you put your feet. Some products will only mask odours, while others could ruin your shoes or may be toxic and damage your skin.

The best solution

to disinfect the inside of your shoes with steam

A quick, effective and environmentally-friendly alternative is using steam. Such as the IGGI steam purifier for example. Compared to other solutions, Laurastar’s steam ensures a thorough disinfection of the inside of your shoes. The temperature of the steam kills 99.9% of bacteria and penetrates fibres. Just 5 seconds on each section is enough to kill viruses, bacteria and dust mites. The result? The bacteria will disappear along with any bad odours and your shoes will feel as good as new.

A number of advantages

The treatment is immediately effective, and the steam is gentle on even the most delicate fibres and materials. A 100% natural solution, free of chemicals, which disinfects your shoes and gives them a new lease of life.

The only downsides

Some materials such as leather can’t withstand humidity or heat. In this case, check the lining of your shoes. If the inside is also made from leather, the best way to disinfect them is to sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over them, leave it to work for a few hours and wipe it off with a dry cloth. As for plastic, it can shrink when in direct contact with heat. Therefore, you need to be careful not to spend more than 5 seconds on each section when disinfecting plastic materials.

Finally, it’s important to wear a glove to protect your fingers from any possible recurrance of steam before you start disinfecting your shoes.
